Klaus Nomi built his stage persona from the wreckage of Weimar cabaret, operatic tradition, and the downtown New York art scene, and *Simple Man* was his second and final studio album, released in 1982 just before his death from AIDS-related illness made him one of the first prominent figures in music to be lost to the epidemic. The record captures a voice that genuinely had no peer, a countertenor who could move from Baroque aria to synth-pop without losing a thread of theatricality.
