Larry Young remains one of the most forward-thinking organists in jazz history, bridging the hard bop tradition with the electric experimentation that would define the early 1970s. He appeared on Tony Williams Lifetime's landmark debut alongside John McLaughlin, and his influence on how the Hammond B-3 could function in adventurous, modal contexts was profound. Mother Ship captures him near the height of his powers, in a session that sat unreleased for over a decade before finally finding its audience.

Blue Note Tone Poet - The final Blue Note album by organist Larry Young, 1969's Mother Ship, bristled with unbridled kinetic energy while delivering soulful grooves. First released in 1980 in the LT Series, the set of Young originals featured Lee Morgan on trumpet, Herbert Morgan on tenor saxophone, and Eddie Gladden on drums. This stereo Blue Note Tone Poet Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket.
