Ranaldo spent three decades as one half of Sonic Youth's guitar axis, a laboratory for noise, drone, and the outer edges of what rock composition could be. Last Night On Earth finds him in more nakedly personal territory, the Sandy-era isolation lending these nine tracks an urgency that his solo work hadn't quite reached before, with Licht's presence pushing the interplay toward something genuinely unpredictable.
Inspired by time spent trapped in his apartment during Hurricane Sandy last fall, Lee Ranaldo's 2013 album with his band The Dust tackles themes of despair, rage and societal shift. The songs on the new album are darker, longer and more intense than those of its predecessor. In particular, the intertwining guitar play between Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) and Alan Licht (Love Child, Run On) enlivens these beautiful, scary songs.
