Lou Donaldson came up through bebop alongside Charlie Parker, but by 1967 he had his ear firmly on the street, chasing the grooves coming out of Harlem and the soul charts. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Mr. Shing-A-Ling captures that pivot moment when hard bop met the dancefloor, and the results hit hard enough that hip-hop producers were still digging through it decades later.
Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Mr. Shing-A-Ling, has long been considered the best of Lou Donaldson's funk/soul albums from the late-'60s, and includes a who's who of great soul jazz players including Blue Mitchell, Jimmy "Fats" Ponder and Leo Smith. Donaldson's funky version of "Ode to Billie Joe" is the most sampled track in Blue Note history.
