Released as a single from *Bedtime Stories* in 1995, "Bedtime Story" was co-written and produced by Björk, marking one of the more unlikely and genuinely thrilling creative partnerships of that decade. The track leaned deep into surrealist, stream-of-consciousness territory, a sharp contrast to the provocateur image Madonna had cultivated through *Erotica* and the *Sex* book, and its accompanying video, directed by Mark Romanek, remains some of the most striking visual work of her career.

Madonna's rise was due in part to her limitless ambition, as well as her desire to provoke. With Bedtime Stories, she commits to a different kind of envelope-pushing. She retools who Madonna is to the public, closing out an era defined by sex, and introduces herself as a woman besotted, by love itself and it's accompanying sorrows.
