Liner Notes

Melanie's connection to the counterculture ran deep long before this night. She had performed at Woodstock in 1969, one of the few solo acoustic acts to hold that enormous crowd, and the Incredible String Band occupied a similarly singular space in the British folk underground, their ornate, mystical sound beloved by everyone from early hippies to serious folklorists. Hearing these two worlds collide in an intimate West End setting makes this document something the original audience likely knew, even then, was rare.

This is an historic Melanie concert performed at the peak of her career. In London's West End, on a warm summer evening in June 1974, Melanie invited Mike Heron and Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band to help her deliver a performance like none other as they are, in her words spoken during the concert, "my very, very favorite band." This is an unforgettable night of music that will touch enthusists of every genre. The original reels were saved from decay in 2019. Now, fully restored, and mixed for the first time, the music and magic from that night are a must for every record collection.
