Recorded in 1988 and released in 1989, *Amandla* found Miles deep in his late-period electric groove, working closely with Marcus Miller, who wrote and produced the bulk of the album. The title is a Zulu and Xhosa word meaning "power," a deliberate political statement during the final years of apartheid in South Africa. It would prove to be one of his last fully realized studio statements before his death in 1991.
