Nick Mason – Fictitious Sports (CD)

Largely overlooked in the Pink Floyd canon, this 1981 solo outing finds the drummer stepping into genuinely strange territory, enlisting Robert Wyatt, Carla Bley, and a cast of jazz-rooted collaborators to craft something that sounds almost nothing like its parent band. Bley composed and arranged the bulk of the material, giving Mason space to simply play, and the result is loose, irreverent, and consistently surprising.
