London-raised and self-taught, Yanya had already built a devoted following through a string of EPs and BBC sessions before this 2019 debut arrived, her restless guitar work and fractured pop structures earning comparisons that never quite stuck because her sound resists easy categorization. Miss Universe threads a loose concept around wellness culture and emotional distance, giving the record an arch, unsettling undertow beneath its prettiest moments.
