Product Details

Oliver Coates built his reputation as a cellist and composer straddling the worlds of contemporary classical music and electronic experimentation, collaborating with artists like Arca and Jonny Greenwood before his score for A24's Aftersun introduced him to a much wider audience. That film's quiet devastation was inseparable from his music, and Harry Lighton clearly understood what Coates brings to emotionally charged cinema: a classical training that never feels academic, and an instinct for texture over spectacle.

Oliver Coates' (Aftersun) score for Harry Lighton's directorial debut Pillion is not what one might expect for a film centered around a BDSM relationship between bikers. The score is restrained and elegant, with piano driven compositions accompanied by spacey synth flourishes and haunting operatic vocals. What results is a romantic electro-classical soundtrack (including a synth rendition of Erik Satie's "Gymnopédie No. 1") that feels akin to flying down an open road on a speeding bike. Starring Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård, Pillion releases in the UK on November 28th with a US release early next year.
