Om – Sudpol (CD)
Product Details
Sudpol arrives as Om's first full studio statement since losing founding drummer Fredy Studer, whose death in 2022 marked the end of an era for Swiss free jazz. The band's willingness to continue, now with a reimagined rhythmic core, says something about the resilience that has always animated their music, from the Coltrane-influenced combustion of their earliest recordings to whatever comes next.
Om made history from 1972 to 1982 combining the energy of rock music with the power of free improvisation. With enormous vitality they bring together the experiences of a young generation electrified by Jimi Hendrix, fascinated by John Coltrane and inspired by free jazz. Om introduced rock music into spontaneous musical processes with uncertain endings. "ElectroAcoustiCore" is what the iconic band calls their music. In 2022, Om celebrated it's 50th anniversary with the album called 50. One month before it's release, Fredy Studer passed away. "In the spirit of survival, Om carried on, touring to support 50 and adding two drummers to fill the titan Studer's shoes," writes Kurt Gottschalk in the liner notes, adding: "Om steps into it's second demi-siècle as an energetic and insightful outfit." On Südpol, long-time members Urs Leimgruber, Christy Doran and Bobby Burri are joined by master percussionists Gerry Hemingway and Tony Buck. The journey goes on!
