Brighten the Corners arrived in 1997 as Pavement's fourth album, a sprawling, unhurried record that found Stephen Malkmus and company leaning into a more melodic looseness after the jagged density of Wowee Zowee. Tracks like "Shady Lane" and "Stereo" showed a band comfortable enough in its own skin to get genuinely tuneful without sacrificing the sideways wit that made them essential.
