Sandwiched between the college-radio breakthroughs of *Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain* and the more polished *Brighten the Corners*, Wowee Zowee was the sprawling, willfully strange outlier in Pavement's catalog, the record where Stephen Malkmus and crew followed their instincts into detours, noise, and country-flecked weirdness without apology. It baffled some listeners in 1995, but time has been very kind to it.
