Crawfish Fiesta holds a bittersweet place in New Orleans music history: recorded in 1979, it was released on Alligator Records in 1980, just weeks after Henry Roeland Byrd passed away at 61. The sessions caught Fess at the peak of his late-career revival, surrounded by some of the city's finest players, and stand as the definitive document of the rolling, rumba-inflected piano style he practically invented.
