Captured live at El Matador, the intimate San Francisco club that served as a proving ground for Brazilian sound in the American market during the early 1960s, this recording catches Mendes before his Brasil '66 breakthrough, when the bossa nova wave was still cresting stateside. It's a rare document of the pianist in his purest setting, the stage, before studio polish and pop crossover defined his legacy.

Serigo Mendes' career took off with worldwide hits by his band Brasil '66. He released 35 albums and was known for playing bossa nova, often mixed with funk. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2012 as a co-writer of "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.
