Released in 1971 as Steppenwolf's seventh studio album, *For Ladies Only* arrived at a moment when the band was visibly straining against the hard rock identity that "Born to Be Wild" had locked them into. The title track's sprawling, suite-like structure pointed toward ambitions that sat uneasily alongside the boogie-rock crowd, making this one of the more genuinely conflicted and interesting corners of their catalog.
Some view it as a feminist effort, others view it as sexist. There's a hint of indication that Steppenwolf had been working toward entering the progressive rock scene. John Kay stepped away from three of the 10 tracks, leaving fans wishing for his vocals.
