Sufjan Stevens – Carrie & Lowell (CD)
Product Details
Recorded in the wake of his mother Carrie's death in 2012, Stevens stripped away the orchestral ambition of albums like *Illinois* to arrive at something almost unbearably intimate, built from acoustic guitar, hushed electronics, and grief that had nowhere left to hide. It stands as one of the most unflinching records about loss, parenthood, and estrangement that American folk music has produced in the past two decades.
Carrie & Lowell sounds like memory: it spans decades yet does not trade on pastiche or nostalgia. Stevens's gauzy double-tracked vocals wash across the dashboard of long-finned, drop-top Americana, yet as we race towards the coast we are reminded that sunshine leads to shadow, for this is a landscape of terminal roads, unsteady bridges, traumatic video stores, and unhappy beds that provide the scenery for tales of jackknifed cars, funerals, and forgiveness for the dead.
