Released in 2005, *Illinois* cemented Sufjan Stevens as one of indie music's most ambitious storytellers, weaving together state history, personal mythology, and orchestral folk arrangements that few writers have attempted before or since. The second installment in his (never-completed) fifty-states project, it draws on figures like John Wayne Gacy Jr. and the Chicago World's Fair to build something that feels less like a concept album and more like a living document of place and memory.
