Sun Ra spent decades insisting he was from Saturn, that his mission was to save Earth through sound, and that the Arkestra was less a band than a cosmic congregation. Mainstream jazz largely looked away. What remained was one of the most genuinely singular bodies of recorded work in American music, built in real time through relentless touring, self-released records on his own Saturn label, and an ensemble that functioned as a living philosophy.
