Sun Ra – Night Of The Purple Moon (CD)

Recorded during one of the most fertile periods of Sun Ra's Arkestra, "Night of the Purple Moon" captures the bandleader's insistence that music existed somewhere between cosmic philosophy and pure sound. Ra's Saturn mythology and his decades leading the Arkestra created a self-contained universe that influenced everyone from Parliament-Funkadelic to free jazz's outermost edges, and this release sits squarely in that tradition of joyful, disciplined strangeness.
