Product Details
Recorded in 1961 and released on Savoy, this was Sun Ra's first major-label date and the session that introduced his restless cosmic vision to a wider audience. Producer Tom Wilson, who would later work with Bob Dylan and the Velvet Underground, recognized something genuinely alien in Ra's approach, blending post-bop structure with tonal colors and rhythmic concepts that had no real precedent. Sixty years on, the music still sounds like it arrived from somewhere else entirely.
This special 60th Anniversary reissue of groundbreaking jazz artist Sun Ra’s iconic 1962 album The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra features all-analog re-mastering by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. The package includes Tom Wilson’s original liner notes, plus insightful new essays by jazz historian Ben Young, as well as by Irwin Chusid, who is also a journalist, radio personality, and author.
