Colin Meloy and company were still a Portland underground secret when Kill Rock Stars released this in 2003, a label home that put them in conversation with a riot grrrl and indie underground lineage that sharpened the band's already distinctive literary edge. The orchestral folk arrangements and Meloy's narrative songwriting here would soon catch wider ears, making this an early document of a band on the precise cusp of a breakthrough.

The follow-up to CASTAWAYS AND CUTOUTS has the band traveling over new territory, mining deeper into their Beatle pop influences to create a record as lush as it is intricate. Strings soar, glockenspiel chime, and analog synths buzz over what the band considers it's finest overture into pop song arrangement, all the while keeping intact the folk-pop instrumentation that has defined their sound since their inception.
