Before Michael McDonald reshaped the band's sound into blue-eyed soul territory, the Doobie Brothers were a locomotive of twin-guitar rock and boogie-driven grooves rooted in the San Jose bar scene of the early 1970s. Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons traded riffs and vocal duties across a run of FM radio staples that held up just as well on an eight-track as they do today, built for open windows and long highway miles.
