Product Details

Birmingham's finest exported something the American market barely had a name for when "Mirror in the Bathroom" and "Save It for Later" started landing on college radio in the early '80s, turning a generation of kids onto the Jamaican rhythms and two-tone politics that shaped the whole movement. Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger built a sound that hit harder live than almost any of their contemporaries, and these tracks still carry that urgency decades later.

In the second coming of ska (c. 1979-1983) The English Beat ruled supreme. The Beat used ska as a foundation on which they used R&B, punk, rock, dub and Afro-beat as material to build three superb albums and a handful of singles. This collection does a marvelous job of distilling their all too short career highlights into one disk.
