Released in the thick of Thatcher's Britain, Wha'ppen found Dave Wakeling, Ranking Roger, and the rest of the Beat pushing well past the two-tone framework that launched them, absorbing sounds from across the African diaspora into something genuinely restless and alive. The band had always been the most musically adventurous of the ska revival pack, and this second LP is where that ambition fully showed its hand.

1LP Gold metallic color vinyl. The 1-LP version of The English Beat's most fusion-oriented records. Wha'ppen reflects the band's signature melange of musical styles and influences, shifting from a heavy reggae/ska/punk sound to a more eclectic sound that included African, steel drum, and dub influences for a wholly original sound. Their socially conscious and politically-oriented lyrics remain as relevant today as in the context of the album's original release during the 1981 riots in England.
