Released in 1981 as Britain's cities were burning, *Wha'ppen?* found Dave Wakeling, Ranking Roger, and the rest of the Birmingham crew deliberately loosening the ska-punk coil that had defined *I Just Can't Stop It*, letting dub space and polyrhythmic textures breathe between the beats. This Record Store Day pressing on clear vinyl, expanded with B-sides that rarely surface, is the edition fans who've been chasing the full picture of the Beat's restless second chapter have been waiting for.

The second of the English Beat's three albums expanded to include two sides of non-LP tracks and B-sides. Wha'ppen reflects the band's signature melange of musical styles and influences, shifting from a heavy reggae/ska/punk sound to a more eclectic sound that included African, steel drum, and dub influences for a wholly original sound. Their socially conscious and politically-oriented lyrics remain as relevant today as in the context of the album's original release during the 1981 riots in England.
