Wayne Coyne and company were already cult favorites when Yoshimi arrived in 2002, but this was the record that cracked them wide open, turning a devoted underground following into something much larger without sacrificing an ounce of the band's Oklahoma-bred weirdness. Named after Yoshimi P-We, drummer for Japanese punk outfit the Boredoms, it's a song cycle that somehow makes vocoder-drenched psychedelia and science fiction anxiety feel deeply human.
Originally released in 2002, The Flaming Lips Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is now available on vinyl.
