Frank Wess spent the better part of the 1950s as a cornerstone of the Count Basie Orchestra, but records like this one reveal the quieter, more intimate side of a musician who was equally at home in small-group settings. Wess was also a pioneer of the flute in jazz, helping legitimize the instrument as a serious voice in the music long before it became fashionable.

This newly remastered edition of tenor sax player Frank Wess’ The Frank Wess Quartet album is released as part of the new Moodsville Series. Originally release in 1960 and recorded at Rudy Van Gelders famed studios in New Jersey it also features Tommy Flanagan (piano), Eddie Jones (bass) and Bobby Donaldson (drums). This new edition is presented on 180-gram vinyl pressed at QRP with all-analog mastering from the original tapes and housed in a Tip-On Jacket.
