Twin Cities punk kids who'd spent years playing too loud and too fast, the Replacements arrived at *Pleased to Meet Me* in 1987 as a leaner, sharper band, recording in Memphis with producer Jim Dickinson at Ardent Studios. The sessions stripped away some of the deliberate sloppiness and revealed the songwriting underneath, particularly on "Alex Chilton," a love letter to the Big Star frontman recorded in the very city where he'd made his name.
