Shape-note singing predates the microphone by centuries, and these field recordings from the late 1920s and early 1930s capture a living tradition that traces back to 18th-century New England singing schools. The raw, unaccompanied four-part harmonies of Sacred Harp, with their modal tonalities and communal call-and-response, are a direct ancestor of the gospel and roots music that runs through so much of what we love today.
