San Francisco's Wooden Shjips built their reputation on hypnotic, motorik grooves rooted as much in the Velvet Underground and Suicide as in the Bay Area's own psychedelic past, and West finds them stretching those influences across wide-open sonic landscapes. The move to Thrill Jockey brought sharper production without softening the band's signature drone and repetition, which hit harder here than on anything they'd released before.

Wooden Shjips stand at the forefront of modern psychedelic rock and present, West their first album for Thrill Jockey. The over riding theme for the album (as indicated by the title) is the American West, and all of the mythology, romanticism, and idealism that it embodies.
