Wynton Marsalis – Standards and Ballads (CD)
Product Details
Wynton Marsalis spent the 1980s and '90s making the case that the American songbook and the jazz standard tradition were living, breathing languages worth mastering at the highest level. These recordings capture him in that mode, bringing the same technical precision and historical seriousness he applied to the classical repertoire, while never losing the warmth that separates a great ballad interpreter from a mere technician.
Wynton Marsalis: STANDARDS, is a 14-song compilation of selections from all five Marsalis Standard Time Volumes (1987-1999), as well as other Columbia albums. STANDARDS includes notes by renowned writer, journalist and jazz critic Stanley Crouch. Album highlights include "When It's Sleepytime Down South," "April in Paris," Ellington's "Melancholia" and Monk's "Reflections." Shirley Horn appears on the album singing "I Can't Get Started" from the soundtrack to the film Tune in Tomorrow.
