Dave Matthews Band emerged from Charlottesville, Virginia in the early 1990s with a sound built on unconventional instrumentation — violin, saxophone, and intricate rhythms standing in for guitar solos — and a devotion to extended live improvisation that made the band a defining act of the jam scene's 1990s resurgence. Anchored by Dave Matthews' distinctive songwriting and vocal phrasing, the band has built one of touring music's most devoted fanbases across three decades of studio albums and legendary live shows.
