Grateful Dead Live Guide

The Dead were a live band first and a studio band a distant second, and the vaults have been proving it for fifty years. This is every live Grateful Dead release we carry, vinyl and CD in one place: Barton Hall, the Fillmore runs, Europe '72, Veneta in the heat, the Cow Palace on New Year's, and the archival series that keeps the reels coming. Studio records live elsewhere. Everything here was played once, in a room, and caught on tape.

Frequently asked questions

What's in this guide?

Every live Grateful Dead release we carry, vinyl and CD together in one place — full archival shows, live compilations, and one-off historical documents. Studio albums are catalogued separately.

Why doesn't every record here say ‘Live’ on the cover?

Because the vault series has never worked that way. Bear's Choice, Reckoning, and Two From The Vault are all live shows, same as the Fillmore East, Merriweather, and Skull & Roses pressings on the vinyl side — they're just catalogued by venue and date instead of the word ‘Live.’ We built this guide to surface exactly those records.

What about deluxe reissues with a bonus live disc?

Those stay filed with the studio album they belong to. American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, and Wake of the Flood are studio records first, even in the editions that ship an extra live disc.

Does this include documentary soundtracks?

Yes, when the release is mostly live performance — the Long Strange Trip soundtrack is here for exactly that reason.

How often does this get new titles?

Whenever the vault gives something up. New archival releases get added as they're pressed.
